St. Mary's

Happy 20th Anniversary!!!!

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of St. Mary’s Center for Women and Children in Dorchester. The organization’s mission and programs have expanded greatly since its beginning in 1993 and echo a long tradition of service on its Dorchester campus, which once housed St. Margaret’s Hospital, to Boston’s most at-risk populations.

St. Mary’s serves one of the most economically deprived and ethnically diverse neighborhoods of Boston. Its mission is to provide learning environments, developmental experiences, and skill-building opportunities that will help low-income women and families from poverty-dense communities transform their lives emotionally, educationally, and economically. Through its six integrated, results-oriented programs, the organization supports more than 600 women, teens, and children annually with shelter, clinical and educational services, employment training and placement, and affordable housing search. Working with one family at a time, St. Mary’s helps them break the generational cycle of poverty and homelessness and transcend barriers to self-sufficiency and stability.

In the course of its 20 years, St. Mary’s has developed expertise in serving at-risk populations and in delivering services responsive to their needs. Staff of St. Mary’s are among Boston’s most qualified and experienced in the field of shelter, education, and employment support services for teen girls, women, and families in the state. Well-versed in both the theoretical and clinical aspects of their work, many of the organization’s staff members have spent their entire professional careers working with at-risk children, adults, and families and have an unwavering dedication to the vision and work of St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s is a 501c3 organization, independent of the Archdiocese of Boston’s Catholic Charities, with a governing board and management structure of its own. It is led by Judy Beckler, a highly experienced and committed administrator of programs for at-risk children, adolescents, and families.

St. Mary's Center is geographically in the center of Massachusetts' most intractable poverty. And it is from this vantage point that we work to transform the lives of those who find themselves at the center of the pain, hopelessness and injustice that this poverty causes - young, single mothers.

By focusing our resources and energies on these young women, we are able to change the dynamics of poverty across the entire community. We start by embracing their potential. We understand that they are not unfortunate women. They are resilient, courageous women in deeply unfortunate circumstances. By building on their innate inner strengths, we help them recover and rebound.

St. Mary's Center develops, searches out and adapts the best, most effective, results-oriented practices and applies them to create pathways to housing and employment self-sufficiency. Through education and training we are tenacious in helping propel young mothers and their children into a stable future.

By putting these young women at the center of our efforts, their self-confidence and resources build as they prepare to take care of themselves and their young children. From the center of our community and through the progression of these young mothers, we radiate change, hope, and possibility. Here from the heart of Dorchester, we work to transform our community one family at a time, helping to ensure that children, who might otherwise make up the next generation of poverty, have options and bright futures.
